Product Detailed Description:

The MB1 Series is a standard double acting pneumatic cylinder with a square aluminum tube body. Engineered as a direct functional replacement for SMC MB1, it delivers identical performance and mounting compatibility at significantly lower cost. Auto switch mounting grooves on all four body surfaces provide maximum installation flexibility for position sensing.

Application Industries:

Automotive Manufacturing,Machine Tool & CNC,Packaging Machinery,Material Handling & Logistics,Food & Beverage Processing,Textile Machinery,Woodworking,Plastics & Rubber,Steel & Metal Processing,Printing & Paper

Product Feature:

  • Square Tube Body — 4-Sided Switch Mounting The square aluminum extrusion provides flat, parallel mounting surfaces on all four sides. Auto switches and magnetic sensors can be mounted on any face without brackets or clamps. This design flexibility simplifies machine layout and enables easy field retrofits. Compatible with all standard reed switches (D-M9B, D-A93, D-A54) and solid-state magnetic sensors (CS1-G, D-M9N).

  • Adjustable Air Cushion at Both Ends Each end cap features an adjustable cushion screw. Fine-tune deceleration for your specific load and speed using only a flathead screwdriver. The pneumatic cushion absorbs kinetic energy at end-of-stroke, eliminating metal-to-metal impact, reducing operating noise, and extending seal service life. For initial setup, fully open both screws, then tighten gradually until the piston decelerates smoothly without bounce.

  • Hard Anodized Aluminum Body — Lightweight and Durable The square aluminum tube undergoes hard anodizing for superior surface hardness, wear resistance, and corrosion protection. The internal bore is precision-honed to a smooth finish for low friction and extended seal life. At approximately 30% lighter than equivalent steel-bodied cylinders, MB1 reduces moving mass in dynamic and high-cycle applications.

  • Pre-Lubricated — Maintenance-Free Operation Each cylinder is factory lubricated with high-performance lithium-based grease. Designed for oil-free (non-lube) operation throughout its entire service life. No daily oiling, no weekly inspection, no scheduled re-lubrication. If your compressed air system already uses an oil-mist lubricator, the cylinder remains fully compatible — do not add oil to a system that was previously non-lube.

  • Chrome Plated Piston Rod — Smooth and Long-Lasting The piston rod is induction hardened and hard chrome plated to a minimum thickness of 20μm. Surface roughness Ra < 0.4μm ensures smooth operation with minimal seal friction. Excellent wear and corrosion resistance under normal industrial conditions. For washdown, food-grade, or highly corrosive environments, a stainless steel (SS304 or SS316) piston rod is available as an option.

  • Wear-Resistant Piston Seal The piston employs a double Y-shape lip seal design with automatic wear compensation. As the seal lip gradually wears over millions of cycles, internal pressure forces the lips outward, maintaining consistent sealing performance. This design extends seal life by approximately 50% compared to conventional O-ring piston seals.

Product Advantages

  • Square tube + tie-rod construction — rigid, serviceable, proven. The MB1 body is a precision-extruded square aluminum tube with four external steel tie rods. This combines the rigidity of a square profile (high bending stiffness, flat surfaces for mounting) with the field-serviceability of tie-rod construction — covers can be removed for seal replacement without demounting the cylinder from the machine. The square tube also provides flat, stable platforms for auto switch mounting on all four faces.

  • 10% weight reduction — easier handling, less inertia. Through redesigned rod cover and head cover geometry, the MB1 achieves a 10% weight reduction compared to its predecessor across bore sizes 50–100 mm. For machine builders, this means lighter moving assemblies, reduced structural support requirements, and lower shipping costs for exported machinery.

  • Auto switch mounting on all four surfaces. The square tube design incorporates sensor mounting grooves on all four faces — top, bottom, left, and right. This provides wiring flexibility impossible on round-body or two-face-slot cylinders. Route sensor cables along whichever face offers the cleanest path back to the control cabinet, and mount sensors on the face that best protects them from debris, coolant, or physical impact.

  • Dust-proof sensor groove covers (optional). An innovative resin fastener strip can be pressed into the unused sensor grooves, sealing them against dust, metal chips, and cutting fluid. This is especially valuable in woodworking, metalworking, and foundry environments where particulates would otherwise accumulate in open grooves and interfere with sensor positioning.

  • Broad bore and stroke range — one series for most tasks. Bore sizes from 32 mm to 125 mm with standard strokes up to 1000 mm cover the vast majority of general automation requirements. One cylinder series, one accessory ecosystem, one set of spare seals — simplify your BOM and reduce maintenance training.

  • Non-rotating variant (MB1K). A special rod design with an internal guide mechanism prevents piston rod rotation without increasing the body footprint. This is ideal for applications where the rod end tooling must maintain a fixed angular orientation but space does not permit a full guided cylinder like the ADVUL.

  • Tandem variant — double the force. Two MB1 cylinders can be connected in-line (tandem configuration), effectively doubling the output force without increasing the bore diameter. This is a space-saving alternative when a single cylinder at the required bore would exceed the available width or height envelope.

  • SMC MB1 / MDB1 1:1 dimensional replacement. Mounting dimensions, tie-rod spacing, port locations, rod-end threads, and auto switch grooves are produced to match SMC MB1 and MDB1 specifications exactly. Drop in, bolt down, reconnect, resume production.

Application:

  • General Industrial Automation: Assembly stations, packaging machinery, material transfer systems
  • Machine Tools: Workpiece clamping, tool changing, feed mechanisms
  • Woodworking Machinery: Pressing, positioning, panel conveying
  • Textile Machinery: Tension control, guide roller actuation, yarn handling
  • Food & Beverage: With optional stainless steel rod and food-grade lubricant
  • Automotive Manufacturing: Welding fixtures, body assembly lines, component testing
  • Printing & Converting: Roller positioning, cutting blade actuation, registration control

Installation and Usage:

  • Mounting: Select from LB foot bracket (most common), FA/FB front or rear flange (highest rigidity), CR center trunnion (pivoting applications), direct through-hole (lowest profile), or CA/CB/TC clevis/swivel (for linkages with angular misalignment). Loosely tighten all bolts, cycle the cylinder through full stroke 2–3 times to self-align, then torque to specification.

  • Piping: Connect compressed air tubing to both ports. Port sizes: G1/8" (bore 32–50 mm), G1/4" (bore 63–100 mm), G3/8" (bore 125 mm). Use one-way flow control valves with meter-out control at both ports for smooth, adjustable speed.

  • Air supply: Use compressed air filtered to 40 μm or finer. Lubricated or non-lubricated operation is acceptable. If using lubricated air, use ISO VG32 turbine oil and maintain consistent lubrication once started.

  • Auto switch installation: Slide the auto switch into the mounting groove on any of the four body faces. Position at the desired stroke-end detection point. Tighten the clamp screw lightly. Press dust-proof resin fastener strips into unused grooves to prevent debris accumulation.

  • Cushioning adjustment (air cushion type): Start with cushion needle valves fully closed. Cycle the cylinder and gradually open the valve until the load decelerates smoothly without hard bottoming at stroke end. Do not overtighten the needle valve.

  • Side load prevention: Ensure the load is aligned axially with the piston rod. The MB1 is not designed for lateral loads — use an external linear guide or switch to a guided cylinder (ADVUL) if side forces cannot be avoided.

  • Temperature limits: Standard NBR seals: -10 °C to 70 °C. For environments outside this range, select Viton (up to 150 °C) or low-temperature PU (down to -40 °C) at time of order.

  • Long-term storage: If storing unused, apply anti-rust oil to the exposed piston rod and install dust caps on the air ports. Do not remove the tie rods or disassemble the covers before use.

FAQ

Q1.MDB1 vs. MB1 — what is the difference?

A1.MDB1 = MB1 with magnetic piston pre-installed for auto switches. MB1 = standard non-magnetic. If you need position sensors, order MDB1 — the magnet cannot be retrofitted.

Q2. When to use the tandem configuration?

A2. When a single cylinder's force is insufficient and a larger bore won't fit in the available width/height. Tandem doubles output force at the same bore and pressure without increasing cross-section.

Q3. What mounting options are available?

A3. Five: foot bracket (LB — most common), front/rear flange (FA/FB — highest rigidity), center trunnion (CR — pivoting, best for strokes 600 mm), direct through-hole (lowest profile), and clevis/swivel (CA/CB/TC — for linkages).

Q4. Can I replace seals without removing the cylinder?

A4. Yes — unscrew four tie-rod nuts at front cover, slide off cover, replace piston and rod seals, reassemble. Seal kits and torque specs included.

Q5. Direct replacement for SMC MB1/MDB1?

A5.Yes — 1:1 dimensional match. Same mounting holes, tie-rod spacing, ports, rod threads, and sensor groove geometry. Drop in, bolt down, reconnect.

Q6. What warranty?

A6. 12–18 months against manufacturing defects. Free replacement for valid claims. Seal kits and repair videos provided. Samples ship within 3 working days.

Q7. Can auto switches mount on all four faces?

A7.Yes — a key MB1 advantage. Route cables along any face. Seal unused grooves with dust-proof resin fastener strips.

Q8. How to align during installation?

A8. Loosely tighten bolts, cycle full stroke 2–3 times, then fully tighten. For trunnion, ensure both pivot bearings are coaxial within 0.1 mm. Misalignment causes seal wear.

Q9.What routine maintenance?

A9.Wipe rod weekly. Check for leaks monthly. Verify stroke time quarterly. Replace seals annually if exceeding 2 million cycles. Tie-rod design allows seal replacement without demounting the cylinder.
